02:29 --> 02:31 [SPEAKER_00]: I was driving through the middle of nowhere.
02:32 --> 02:36 [SPEAKER_00]: We're talking like no houses, no gas stations, no lights, just woods.
02:36 --> 02:40 [SPEAKER_00]: The kind of woods that look black, even with your high beams on.
02:41 --> 02:44 [SPEAKER_00]: I remember checking the clock, 1143 p.m.
02:45 --> 02:49 [SPEAKER_00]: I remember that because I was tired and calculating how long until I got home.
02:50 --> 02:51 [SPEAKER_00]: And that's what I saw the sign.

02:53 --> 02:58 [SPEAKER_00]: By laughed, not because it was funny, just because it felt kinda cliche.

03:02 --> 03:04 [SPEAKER_00]: I actually think I said out loud.
03:04 --> 03:05 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, okay.
03:06 --> 03:09 [SPEAKER_00]: Then the radio cut out, just like that.
03:09 --> 03:15 [SPEAKER_00]: No static, no warning, one second music, the next silence.
03:16 --> 03:22 [SPEAKER_00]: The kind of silence that feels kind of wrong, I reach for the dial, nothing, every station was dead.
03:23 --> 03:25 [SPEAKER_00]: So I just kind of figured I was out of range.
03:25 --> 03:26 [SPEAKER_00]: No big deal.
03:30 --> 03:33 [SPEAKER_00]: a person, standing on the shoulder.
03:34 --> 03:35 [SPEAKER_00]: So I slowed down immediately.
03:35 --> 03:38 [SPEAKER_00]: You don't expect to see someone out there at midnight.
03:39 --> 03:43 [SPEAKER_00]: At first I thought it was a hitchhiker, even though those are pretty rare these days.
03:43 --> 03:47 [SPEAKER_00]: But as I got closer, I realized that they weren't moving.
03:47 --> 03:48 [SPEAKER_00]: Not even a little.
03:49 --> 03:52 [SPEAKER_00]: Just kind of standing and facing the woods.
03:53 --> 03:55 [SPEAKER_00]: Not the road, not me, the woods.
03:56 --> 04:08 [SPEAKER_00]: I passed them, and for a second my headlights lit up their face, and I really wish they had, because it wasn't a face, not exactly.
04:08 --> 04:17 [SPEAKER_00]: The features were there, eyes, nose, mouth, but they looked wrong, like someone had tried to sculpt a person from memory.
04:18 --> 04:20 [SPEAKER_00]: The proportions didn't quite fit.

04:24 --> 04:25 [SPEAKER_00]: I remember my stomach dropping.

04:36 --> 04:39 [SPEAKER_00]: I sat there for a second staring into the darkness behind me.
04:39 --> 04:46 [SPEAKER_00]: Nothing, no movement, no footsteps, no sign that anybody had ever been there.
04:47 --> 04:51 [SPEAKER_00]: So I told myself, shh, getting tired must have imagined it.
04:52 --> 04:54 [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, people do that when they're tired, right?
04:56 --> 04:57 [SPEAKER_00]: That's when I heard the first knock.
04:59 --> 05:02 [SPEAKER_00]: From the back of the car, I froze.
05:04 --> 05:07 [SPEAKER_00]: Again, like something hitting the trunk with their fist.
05:08 --> 05:10 [SPEAKER_00]: I looked in the mirror nothing.
05:10 --> 05:15 [SPEAKER_00]: No one behind me, the woods were still, then came the third knock.
05:16 --> 05:16 [SPEAKER_00]: Closer.
05:18 --> 05:21 [SPEAKER_00]: Like directly behind my seat, inside the car.
05:22 --> 05:25 [SPEAKER_00]: I whipped around nobody, nothing, just darkness.
05:27 --> 05:29 [SPEAKER_00]: And I don't mind admitting this, I panicked.
05:31 --> 05:37 [SPEAKER_00]: I floored it, the car shot forward, 60, 70, 80 miles an hour, the tree's blurred past.
05:37 --> 05:43 [SPEAKER_00]: And then, that's when I saw the sign again, mile marker 13.
05:45 --> 05:45 [SPEAKER_00]: What the hell?
05:46 --> 05:48 [SPEAKER_00]: That isn't possible.
05:48 --> 05:52 [SPEAKER_00]: I've been driving for at least 10 minutes, maybe more, and there it was.
05:53 --> 05:59 [SPEAKER_00]: Same sign, same bent corner, same rust stain, so I passed it.
06:00 --> 06:09 [SPEAKER_00]: And a few hundred yards later, there was that person, standing on the shoulder, facing the woods exactly where they'd been before.
06:11 --> 06:15 [SPEAKER_00]: My blood went cold, note not where they'd been.
06:16 --> 06:23 [SPEAKER_00]: The same person, the same pose, the same impossible stillness, as if I'd never passed them at all.
06:24 --> 06:26 [SPEAKER_00]: But that's what I noticed something else.
06:28 --> 06:29 [SPEAKER_00]: They were smiling now.
06:31 --> 06:33 [SPEAKER_00]: I don't remember much after that.
06:34 --> 06:35 [SPEAKER_00]: Just pieces, fragments.

06:37 --> 06:39 [SPEAKER_00]: I remember crying.

06:41 --> 06:43 [SPEAKER_00]: And I remember seeing mile marker 13 again.

06:53 --> 06:56 [SPEAKER_00]: The fourth time they were standing at the edge of the pavement.

07:09 --> 07:13 [SPEAKER_00]: Eventually, my car died, no warning, engine just stopped.
07:14 --> 07:22 [SPEAKER_00]: I coasted to a halt, the headlights stayed on, the woods glowed yellow, and there, maybe 30 feet ahead stood the figure.
07:23 --> 07:30 [SPEAKER_00]: In the middle of the road, motionless, watching me, so I grabbed my phone, no signal
07:39 --> 07:40 [SPEAKER_00]: from the roof.
07:40 --> 07:42 [SPEAKER_00]: Something was standing on my car.
07:43 --> 07:49 [SPEAKER_00]: I couldn't breathe, I couldn't move, slowly, very slowly.
07:50 --> 08:00 [SPEAKER_00]: Something slid across the windshield, a face upside down, looking in, smiling at me.
08:02 --> 08:09 [SPEAKER_00]: I squeezed my eyes shut, I don't know for how long, maybe seconds, maybe hours when I open them again, it was morning.
08:09 --> 08:15 [SPEAKER_00]: The road was empty, cars were passing by birds were saying everything looked normal.
08:16 --> 08:18 [SPEAKER_00]: My engine, of course, started immediately.
08:20 --> 08:23 [SPEAKER_00]: I drove home, I never told anyone, not for years.
08:25 --> 08:27 [SPEAKER_00]: But last week something happened.
08:28 --> 08:30 [SPEAKER_00]: Something I still can't quite explain.
08:31 --> 08:36 [SPEAKER_00]: I was cleaning out the garage and I found the old GPS unit from that car.
08:36 --> 08:38 [SPEAKER_00]: The one I used that night.
08:40 --> 08:43 [SPEAKER_00]: I plugged in, powered it on, just to see if it still worked.
08:44 --> 08:48 [SPEAKER_00]: The screen flickered, loaded, and displayed a route.
08:49 --> 08:55 [SPEAKER_00]: Not my address, not any place I'd ever been, just one destination, one road.
08:56 --> 09:02 [SPEAKER_00]: And beneath it, a single note, a note I know was not there before.
09:03 --> 09:07 [SPEAKER_00]: It said, return to mile marker 13.
09:09 --> 09:15 [SPEAKER_00]: And then, through that tiny speaker, I heard three knocks.
